CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
RUBY
âDid you?â I asked. âDid you kill Jake?â Not that I thought sheâd tell me the truth if she had, but it sure felt good to finally ask a straightforward question.
Shannon shook her head. âNo. No, I did not. Did you?â
âNo way,â I said quickly, taken aback. Why would anyone think that I would kill Jake? I barely knew him.
âGood. Now that thatâs out of the way, why donât you tell me what youâre really doing here?â
âI, uhâ¦â My voice trailed off. Short of telling her that the ghost of the woman whoâd killed herself in my apartment had told me that Jakeâs death wasnât random and that she had recruited me to help prove it for reasons I didnât fully understand, I didnât know what to say.
âWere you and Jake close?â she asked.
My cheeks flushed. âNo, no,â I insisted. âNothing like that. Heâs not my type.â
âReally? Because youâre certainly his type.â
âReally,â I insisted. Shannon wasnât the first person to tell me that. I wondered if what Iâd interpreted as Jakeâs niceness wasnât something more. Which, yuck, no. Even if I was anywhere close to being ready to date againâwhich I wasnâtâJake was old enough to be my dad.
âBut you were friends?â Shannon pressed.
âNot really.â
âBut you think that thereâs more to Jakeâs death than the police, the professionals, do?â
I thought about it for a minute. Shannon said she didnât have anything to do with Jakeâs death. Did I believe her? Maybe. Maybe not. If I told her that I thought Jake had been murdered, and she was the killer, what was the worst that could happen? Cordelia was by my side, and Iâd already seen her in attack mode on the bus. I nodded. âYeah, I do.â
Shannon took a swig of her beer. She put it down, then said, âMe, too.â
We stared at each other. Could I trust Shannon? She was being frank with me. I could return the favor. âIâve got this feeling that Jakeâs death wasnât some random event. And if it wasnât random, then it was premeditated. Murder. But the cops wrote it off like itâs nothing,â I said.
âYeah, but why do you care?â Shannon asked. âYou werenât dating him. You werenât friends. Why does it matter to you?â
I blinked at her. Why did it matter to me? Other than Cordelia asking me to look into it, I didnât really have a reason. I could have said no. What was the worst she could do? But I wasnât doing this because I was afraid to upset my ghostly roomie. I wanted to help her. And I wanted to help Jake. âUm, because?â
âBecause?â Shannon let out a dry laugh. âAnd it has nothing to do with being worried that whoever did this to Jake is still running around your neighborhood, free as a bird. Free to kill again?â
âNow that you mention itâ¦â Her logic was a lot better than mine.
âJake was chivalrous, you know,â Shannon said.
Only, I didnât know that. I barely knew him at all.
âHe was a good guy, and he wouldnât want you to put yourself in danger for him.
